Nigerian Street Food Pop-up

Join us for the Inaugural EMP & UCA Pop-up Restaurant

Our ‘May 2017 Whirligig’ is on Saturday, May 13, 2017 from 7-11pm (Dinner will be served at 8pm)

Not many people know that one in five black Africans is Nigerian. The world’s most populous black nation also has the widest variety of food in Africa.

For our first pop-up at Maida Hill Place, we will be taking a culinary journey through Southern Nigeria with various nods to our European roots. We kick off at 7pm with canapés and a chance to make new friends with DJ Cole Train and his unique blend of Jazz and Afro Beat tunes.

Dinner will be served from 8pm …. From the creeks of Southern Nigeria is the eponymous Fisherman’s Soup. A dish invented out of necessity by Efik fishermen who were often away from home weeks at a time. They took with them basic provisions which they supplemented with some of their catch.

We will also be featuring a variation of Jollof Rice (one of Nigeria’s most famous exports aside from crude oil. Ask Jamie Oliver). Bazaar Rice, smoked fish filets punctuate this smokey jollof-style rice, which will transport you straight to the street markets of Eastern Nigeria.

GizDodo is a modern invention – fried plantain with spiced gizzard. A wonderfully colourful and aromatic dish.

We can’t end without giving you a taste of Suya. The most popular street food in Nigeria. Think Satay, think kebabs, and think of something even better. Prime cuts of beef, marinated in a mixture of peanuts, chilli, garlic, ginger and various Nigerian spices and then cooked on a charcoal grill. This will be available to buy on the night.”

TESTIMONIALS

“When you're starting out it is hard to know when to take the leap out of cooking from your own home to paying rent. Maida Hill offered the flexibility my business needed in the early stages. The large combination oven and walk in fridge are fantastic... a dream come true after cooking at home”
